HARNESSING DATA AND INSIGHTS TO DEEPEN AUSTRALIA'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE CYBER SECURITY WORKFORCE

AUCyberExplorer is an interactive tool that tracks the state of the Australian cyber security job market by providing detailed data and insights about cyber security job supply, demand for workers and career pathways.

It highlights current market trends that can be used by government, researchers, employers, employees and education providers to make strategic evidence-based decisions that support the growth of cyber security employment and education in Australia.

Who we help?

  • Local Employers

Local employers can use the supply & demand maps to understand changes in advertised roles and the size of the workforce to strategically plan for future growth. The top roles feature will further explain how they can align the roles within their organisation’s to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) framework and industry standards.

  • Employees & Students

Employees & students can use the supply & demand maps to explore the most sought-after cyber security roles in Australia, including where they are advertised, how much the average salaries are and what is needed to be competitive. The top roles feature will then outline different pathways into each cyber security role.

  • Government & Researchers

Policymakers & researchers can use the supply & demand maps to understand workforce trends across Australia and help inform programs and policies, including regional programs. The international and historical supply & demand feature allows for comparison of trends over time internationally, which will help the industry understand and learn from international markets.

  • Education Providers & Career Counselors

Education providers & career counsellors can use the top roles and certifications tools to identify trends in requested certifications, skills and education, and help shape policies and education programs, as well as providing workers and students with guidance on their careers. The forecast supply & demand map can help identify what roles will have the most demand in the future.

ANZSCO and ANZSIC codes

The Australian and New Zealand Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) provides a basis for the standardised collection, analysis and dissemination of occupation data for Australia and New Zealand. In the December 2021 ANZSCO revision, additional cyber security codes were introduced, which enabled more detailed information to be collected on the Australian cyber security job market.

With the same intent to create alignment through a common taxonomy as the ANZSCO codes, the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) has been used in the compilation and analysis of industry statistics in Australia and New Zealand.

With these established classification systems, AUCyberExplorer has built a range of tools that visualise data, and allow for a deeper understanding of the cyber security job market.

NICE and ANZSCO

NICE
  • Specialised cyber security framework
  • Provides categories, specialties and work roles, all specific to cyber security
  • US
ANZSCO
  • Australian framework for all industries
  • Provides Unit Groups and occupations specific to cyber security
  • AU
ANZSCO ANZSIC

Australian Skills Classification

The Australian Skills Classification (ASC) provides detailed information on the specialist tasks, technology tools and core competencies for ANZSCO occupations, and reveals how skills relate across these occupations. The ASC can be explored through an interactive interface and data is available for download. Visit the ASC to learn more about the skills used by cyber occupations in Australia.

The Australian Skills Classification compliments the skills-based information provided on AUCyberExplorer, and a comparison is provided below.

Australian Skills Classification
  • Articulates skills based on ANZSCO framework and industry research.
  • Regularly updated through ongoing research and analysis of Australian sources.
